Shin Splints
Is a medical term used to describe pain in the shin region. The condition is caused by over use of muscles that are located in the front part of the leg. It can be caused by injury or strenuous activity such as running, jogging, jumping or fast–paced walking. Initial treatment consists of rest, ice, elevation and use of anti-inflammatory medication. Shin splints can be causes by an abnormal foot structure such as a flat foot or too high of an arch. Excessive rolling motion, called over-pronation, can also contribute to the development of this condition. In these instances good athletic shoes, arch supports or orthotics can properly align the foot and also act as effective shock-absorbers.
