Peripheral neuropathy is due to nerve damage. There are over 15 known causes with diabetes heading the list. The exact cause is usually not known--this is called idiopathic neuropathy. Neuropathy is generally not curable but new treatments such as laser, infrared and nutritional supplements are available which can relieve discomfort and helps prevent the progression of the condition.
Dr. Marc Spitz is the director of the Foot Pain Center.
